<image:caption>As the years went on and I moved from that village, and eventually moved back to the States, I lost touch with Jessica and her family, though I never stopped thinking of them and praying for them. Last week we sent a health agent out to her remote village to check on them, and we found Jessica, happy and healthy, living with her family. This story reminded me:</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Felandes Survives Malnutrition! - Felandes’s mother stayed with him while he got the care he needed. For the first two weeks it was unclear whether he would survive or not. But he pulled through! After he was done with his treatment we transported him home and gave his family livestock as part of our follow-up program! Livestock is a major business in this part of Haiti and having livestock to breed and sell is a huge advantage. His father couldn’t say thank you enough as he left the clinic with his healthy son and a new business opportunity to help provide for his family.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - We Have an Ambulance! - This area has NEVER had its own vehicle or way to transport patients besides a motorcycle. The 14,000 people in this village have lived their whole lives without a doctor, hospital, or medical lab. These people have been left to fend for themselves and so many have suffered and died because of it.</image:title>

<image:caption>We partner with Haitian doctors, nurses and aid workers who have a heart for helping their own communities. They know their people and their struggles better than anyone, and our goal is to stand behind and support them as they bring solutions to the life and death situations they face every day. We advocate, fundraise, provide administrative and logistical help, while the local staff lead the way.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the very rural mountains where we work, people are considered fortunate if they eat once a day. Working to combat malnutrition in an area like this isn’t easy. Several factors contribute to malnutrition, but sometimes it is as simple as not having enough food to eat.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Team - Founder/ Executive Director Brittany Joy Hilker</image:title>
<image:caption>Brittany lived in Haiti full-time from 2009-2021. She is fluent in Haitian Creole and considers Haiti “home.” After graduating with her Masters Degree in Social Work she moved to Haiti to serve for what she thought would be a short time. A one year commitment soon turned into her life’s mission after the malnutrition she saw everywhere deeply affected her. She began working with local doctors and nurses, helping coordinate malnutrition clinics and facilitating emergency care for children. The majority of her years in Haiti were spent with Danita’s Children, directing malnutrition programs with their pediatric hospital. Upon moving to the U.S. in 2021 Brittany started Partner Haiti in order to continue to expand the work she started with her Haitian colleagues years before. Brittany has had long standing relationships with the Haitian medical professionals she works with and together they are determined to help alleviate the suffering of many men, women and children in rural Haiti.</image:caption>

<image:title>Team - Country Director and Head Nurse Joel Jean</image:title>
<image:caption>Joel is a Registered Nurse who is very well known and respected in his community. He grew up in Baie d’Orange, a rural town in Southern Haiti. After going to nursing school in the capital, Port au Prince, he returned to his home village to serve the people that he loves. Joel played a crucial role during the cholera epidemic in 2010, where he worked closely with the Haitian government, running a cholera clinic that is still serving his community today. He also has received extensive training and experience in malnutrition treatment over the past 15 years. Joel works tirelessly for the people he serves, and has never considered this work his job, but rather, his life’s calling.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mariline works in the Malnutrition Programs and is also our on-call nurse for patients who are sent to the hospital. She makes a 3 hour motorcycle trip each week to help with more than 100 children in the malnutrition program. She takes weight, height, gives out the malnutrition supplement, and provides education to the families. Mariline also plays a key role in being our “hospital” nurse. She lives in the city where we often send people for further hospital care and acts as the advocate for these people, making sure they get the care they deserve at the local hospital. These women are monitored for potential complications and treated for medical conditions as needed. <image:title>Prenatal - Midwife Support</image:title>
<image:caption>In rural Haiti most women give birth at home with their family or with the help of a midwife. Midwives are crucial to reaching women who would never otherwise go to a hospital for care. Their work prevents countless mother and infant deaths. They are also crucial in recognizing early warning signs and coordinating outside care. We have assembled a team of midwives from the surrounding villages of Baie d’Orange who meet monthly to participate in training. We provide these midwives with Clean Birth Kits that help ensure a safe and sanitary delivery.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prenatal - Emergency Care</image:title>
<image:caption>Not all emergencies can be prevented. Countless times per week women are brought to the clinic and it is often too late for either the mom or the baby. Partner Haiti has funds available for emergency transportation and medical care at the closest hospital. We help women with preeclampsia, placenta previa, and other life threatening emergencies get the care they need. Our recently purchased ambulance has already helped save countless lives!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Malnutrition - Out-Patient</image:title>
<image:caption>This is where most of the work is done. If the child does not have other complications, and is able to eat, they are put on the out-patient program where they come once a week to the malnutrition clinic and are seen by a nurse and given their Plumpy Nut/Medika Mamba. Their weight is recorded each week to make sure they are gaining properly, and as long as they are gaining weight and coming to their weekly visits, they can finish their treatment at home. This is a family centered program, where a caregiver receives education and is a big part of their child’s recovery.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Malnutrition - Follow-up/Prevention</image:title>
<image:caption>To prevent relapse, the head nurse does follow-up with each child after they are finished with their treatment. They do monthly home visits to ensure the child remains in good health. They are also provided free basic medical care, and if they qualify, they can be part of the Family Assistance Program. Education and early detection is key in preventing malnutrition, which is why education is weaved into every part of the program. Access to basic medical care and good prenatal care is also something that is offered to each family as a means to prevent malnutrition or relapse.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Malnutrition - Feeding Program</image:title>
<image:caption>Our feeding program is available to all malnourished and vulnerable children in our area. We have recently added this program and right now are able to provide a hot meal one day per week. Our hope is to increase to two days per week in the next month and continue to add days as our sponsorship of this programs grows.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Malnutrition - How is Malnutrition Treated?</image:title>
<image:caption>The World Health Organization and the Haitian Health Department have very clear protocols on treating malnutrition. Using a special milk based formula called F-75 and F-100 and a Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food called Plumpy Nut/ Medika Mamba, calories and protein are slowly and steadily introduced. After the child has lost edema and/or is stable, the amount of therapeutic food is increased until the goal weight is reached. In addition the child is treated for infection, parasites and other complications if necessary. Read more about the Who Guidelines for treating malnutrition here.</image:caption>
